Questions

Does it add colour, or boost the colour already in my photo?

It boosts the colour already there. Every colour photo of the Moon holds faint mineral colour: titanium-rich seas are a little blue, iron-rich areas a little orange. AstroSlide first balances the Moon to neutral grey, which removes the yellow or orange cast from our air, then makes only these differences stronger. It never paints new colour.

Does it work on a black and white photo?

It sharpens it, but it stays grey. A true black and white photo (from a mono camera, or saved as greyscale) has no colour left to boost. A colour photo that only looks grey is fine: most Moon photos do, and the colour is still in there.

Why do two of my photos come out in different colours?

It isn't random: the same photo gives the same result every time. The Moon's colour is so faint that it is boosted about 10× on Strong, so small differences between photos grow too. Blown-out white areas have no colour left, a noisier photo gives noisier colour, and haze and the Moon's height in the sky change the colour your camera records. The Subtle, Medium and Strong looks and the Warmth slider change it too.
